Brittany was working on losing a few pounds, but struggling. I had her keep a food log for 3 days, tracking everything she ate and all of her workouts. After analyzing her data, I was puzzled. Based on her workouts, she should have been losing some weight if she was consistently following the diet she wrote down, which she insisted she was doing, so I probed a little further. âI noticed you didnât write down any beveragesâdoes that mean you were only drinking water?â I asked. âWell ⦠no â¦â she replied slowly.
We went through her diet again, this time adding in the beverages. Every morning she had a Grande Caramel Macchiato from Starbucks, at lunch usually a lemonade or fruit juice, and dinner most nights included her favorite, sweet tea. Brittany thought she was approaching her beverages in a healthy manner. After all, itâs not like she was drinking soda every day. We discussed how quickly these calories add up, even in seemingly innocent drinks: 250 calories in her macchiato, another 300 in her fruit juice, and nearly 250 in her sweet tea. She was consuming 800 calories a day just from drinksâcertainly enough to keep her from meeting her weight loss goals!
Water wasnât a favorite for Brittany, so we discussed some other options: Infusing water with fruit, cucumber, or mint, switching to unsweetened tea (or at least slowly weaning herself off the heavily sweetened kind), drinking coffee instead of blended coffee drinks, and trying various flavored water products. Once Brittany changed her beverage habits, her weight loss goals became much more attainable and those few pounds actually came off pretty quickly.
